Different penetration testing techniques often have different labels and definitions to describe the approaches which are taken and the types of risk and vulnerabilities which are identified:

  • Black Box Penetration testing is often referred to where the security consultant is only provided with network access to the devices or services to assess and no further information. This is often considered representative of a real-world attack scenario, which can help determine risks but may not be able to identify every issue.
  • Grey Box Penetration testing will typically provide a security assessor some information, such as user accounts, to further access systems, but will not provide full admin access to conduct an in-depth review.   • White Box Penetration Testing is usually intended to provide full access to security teams, such as admin access, available source code, and operating system access controls.
